Dr. Mark Breitenberg, President of Icsid (2009-2011)

On behalf of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) and in collaboration with our International Design Alliance (IDA) partners, the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (Icograda) and the International Federation of Interior Architects/ Designers (IFI), I look forward to welcoming you to Taipei for the inaugural IDA Congress from Monday 24 – Wednesday 25 October 2011, organised by Taiwan Design Center.

Themed 'Design at the Edges', the congress will emphasise the borders between the design industry and stakeholders of design from other sectors. The programme will highlight cutting edge design paradigms whilst addressing the importance of dialogue and collaboration. As such, we hope to stimulate a discussion not only about the creative industries, but also emphasise design as a crucial component in relation to services and systems in all sectors.

Although the IDA Partners have previously brought their congresses together in a joint format, the interdisciplinary structure of the new IDA Congress will showcase a dynamic event programme, wherein participants will be given the opportunity to explore and study the edges, the incorporation as well as the distinction of design disciplines, in particular, industrial design, communication design and interior architecture design.

International keynote speakers will present cutting edge topics from a broad range of life aspects including, biotechnology, urbanism, economic development, the internet and international migration. Panel respondents from industrial, communication and interior architecture design will discuss the presentations in a format we hope will underline the importance of design in these example sectors, creating a dialogue that will expose the potential of design to improve quality of life throughout the world.

For more than 50 years, the biennial Icsid Congress has provided a forum for innovation and progress in the field of industrial design. It has presented an opportunity for our members to collaborate with the wider international design community, examining important issues in industrial design and helping guide the evolution of the field. As part of this new interdisciplinary event, participants in the IDA Congress will witness the positive social and economic impact design provides to societies, and implement these practices within their governments, businesses, educational institutions and organisations all around the world.

Since October 2007, when Taiwan (Chinese Taipei) was confirmed as the host for the IDA Congress, Taipei has emerged as the ideal location for this landmark event. A city on the edge of the traditional and the modern possessing a large multi-national community, Taipei is steeped in history yet on the cutting-edge of innovation. I am confident that every guest and participant of the inaugural IDA Congress will be greatly inspired by this diverse, historic and beautiful setting.

I eagerly anticipate the discussions and programmes we have planned together with Taiwan Design Center, and passionately believe that the progress that will be made in Taipei has the potential to shape the future of design. I hope to see you there.
